This post is primarily intended towards people who love to live their life in emacs and avidly use for all their day to day needs.

Emacs offers some very powerful tools for text processing and moreover is available for all platforms and is free as in free speech.

This article primarily focuses on using emacs as a powerful tool for managing snippets of information which can be synced across computers and can be accessed from anywhere, including your iphone or android phone.

Hard-core emacs users will definitely know about Org-mode which is a fascinating emacs mode for managing information, the best part is that this very powerful and unobstructive mode provides all the features right at the fingertips …. the default set of key-bindings will appeal emacs veterans instantly because many of the key-bindings have been tailored after the most used emacs shortcuts and will therefore be easy to learn. For example : C-c C-n can be used to move to next heading, C-c C-p moves to previous heading etc.

The org-mode website provides links to detailed tutorials and guides explaining how to use it for simple-note taking, as a gtd app, for maintaining to-do lists , tables and what not.

Now we come to another crutial part.. How to sync these notes across computers . If you are using emacs for taking notes related to all your daily needs you might want to access these notes on-the go … preferably even from your mobile smartphone. This is made possible by a script written by Konstantinos Efstathiou called simplenote.el. This extention enables you to use emacs as a frontend for a free web-based service called simplenote , enabling you to seamlessly upload, pull and sync your notes with the simplenote server, right from emacs. Although, the extension is in alpha stage, its pretty much usable.

Although I am not saying this is a perfect combination, for simplenote.el does not provide access to many features of simplenote like version control, and tag based filtering. But it might work well for you if you are looking forward to a free and simple solution to sync your notes.

Another powerful solution for syncing notes across devices is Dropbox . Dropbox is an cross-platform application(not emacs specific) that synchronizes all the contents of a particular folder across devices and these contents are even accessible via the web interface.Their free service permits for a maximum limit of 1GB (which would be sufficient if all you need to share is day-to-day notes and to-dos and planners etc. ) while for greater volumes of data paid plans are available.
