I tend to favour SSuite Office’s free office suites. Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

Adopting open source or free software like this is a great way to migrate toward Linux. Once you’re comfortable with these replacements for commercial software, you can switch to Linux, using the same programs. It makes the transition much easier, as it can be accomplished in phases.
This is a great list of software. The one i use the most on this list is vlc. It’s a great media player.
