Few days back while I was trying some stuff on my blog I got a 500 internal error in Computer Talks blog which runs on wordpress . Before that there was some sort of problem going on with my web host so I thought that this may be a problem of hosting. But, when I continued to happen for the whole day, I thought of there maybe a problem in some coding it and did a Google search regarding this and found that others too faced this type of problem while trying to modify .htaccess file. Most of the times the 500 internal error for wordpress happens due to the corrupt .htaccess file .

I got this message when I was getting 500 internal error :

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@comptalks.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I found out that it was due to a plugin which I installed recently on the site. So, what should you do when you find this type of error? At first, you need to backup the .htaccess file and then upload a blank .htaccess file and check whether your site is working or not now. 9 out of 10 times it will work . After that you can configure the htaccess file again.

  1. I have this Internal server error every now and then and I was guessing it something to do with the .htaccess file but I am a bit freaked out about editing it.

I will back it up like you suggest and give it a go.
