iPhone, iPod, iPad, all are a craze these days and so is jailbreaking  and unlocking of these devices. Internet is full of blogs and sites that offer you the ways and means to jailbreak or unlock your iOS device, but most of the methods require that you first put your device into DFU mode. This article is an attempt to understand what DFU mode is, and how too put your iOS device to DFU mode.

What is DFU mode?

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is a state that puts your iPhone into a state where it can interface with iTunes and it does not load the iPhone operating system (iOS) or boot loader. It’s quite essential to enter the DFU mode to Jailbreak or if you’re having trouble updating to the latest iOS release. There are these days a few apps that will automatically put your device to DFU mode while most will simply not do so and so you’ll have to it on your own.

DFU vs Recovery Mode

One very common confusion is that DFU and Recovery Modes are the same but this ain’t true.DFU mode does not load the iPhone operating system (iOS) or boot loader. In case of Recovery mode it loads iBoot which does a integrity check and will not let you upgrade the firmware. The screen will appear totally black in DFU mode, so you can’t guess whether the device is in DFU or powered down from simply looking at the screen.

Step3: Release power but keep holding home until your device is recognized as a USB device.Soon  iTunes will pop up a window (like the one below) telling you that it’s detected an iPhone in recovery mode and your iPhone’s screen will be black.
