The Ubuntu 10.10 is almost here and all those who are new to Ubuntu would like to know how to install Ubuntu 10.10 on their PC. This issue shall be handled here. Last week , we provided the complete preview of Ubuntu 10.10 and you can go and see the features of Ubuntu 10.10 in that post .
Installing within Windows

Ubuntu provides an exceptional option to install it as an application inside windows. All you need to do is download the iso file, mount it and run the wubi.exe. You will be prompted to select how much dsk space you would like to allocate for Ubuntu and in which drive. Enter the username and password and it will prompt you to restart. On restarting it will complete the installation process. You can also remove Ubuntu from the add or remove software option in windows.

Wubi.exe

Installing in a separate partition

If you want to install Ubuntu in a separate partition, you need to boot from an Ubuntu Live CD or USB.  To create a bootable USB in windows you an mount the iso and run the usb-creator.exe. If you already have Ubuntu you can use the Startup Disk Creator program in System>Administration. In other distributions you can use unnetbootin software to create bootable USB drive.

usb-creator

You need to have an empty partition. To partition NTFS (Windows drives) you can use partition magic. Linux Ext 3/4 drives can be partitioned using Disk Utility software.

Insert the CD or USB drive and reboot the computer. To boot from USB you have to enter BIOS boot selection using the special key ( different for different companies. For eg F12 for Lenovo ) and choose to boot from USB. Choose “Install Ubuntu” when the option screen turns up. Fill in the details which are quite straight forward except for choosing the partition.

Select “Manually Specify” in the partition selection menu and then a list of available partitions turn up. Right click on the one in which to install and set filesystem type to ext4 and mount point to “/” . Check the “Format” option and then proceed.

The Installation will complete in around 10 minutes. Enjoy using the Ubuntu 10.10 !!!

I am in the process of installing on a seperate partion. I filled out the info on the Who are you? Page and the stays bar says Ready when you are… But the bar itself is not full. The forward button is greyed out and won’t let me continue past this point. Been like this for about 10 minutes now. Am I missing something?

I figured it out. There was no green chech on username and a lil research showed me that you can’t have caps on the username. I reentered my name (with no caps) and then I was able to continue!! Don’t laugh this is my first time!!

Hi Rohit.. recently I tried installing ubuntu 10.10 along with Win 7. Three things I would like to know:
    1. Which partition does Ubuntu select by default for dual boot?
    2. The partition sizes values are completely different from which is shown in windows drive properties. Eg: in windows the partition size is shown as 50 gb while in Ubuntu installation it shows 52 gb. Why?
    3. how to select drive of our own for installation?

    Do reply. I am waiting.

  11. Roberto

I’ve been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my dell inspiron 1300 (512MB 40GB) to get rid of windows HEX-pee. I can install it from the boot disk but it asks for a username and password which i was never prompted to create!! WTF?

I can successfully install inside of windows but this defeats the whole purpose of avoiding xp. I need some help, my head is spinning.

P.S. when i boot from dvd it dosent prompt me for the install option unless i hit enter. Otherwise the ubuntu screen with the 5 dots alternating white and red eventually freezes at 5 red dots…. then nothing. Have to hold the power button and it flashes to dos which states autentication faliure repeatedly and then i have to hold power button to cold start again.
