Pidgin sure is one of the best IM client out there. But one has to admit that it has a few irritating traits at times. One nagging problem, that I personally faced was the “huge” tooltip that pops up when you mouse-hover over a Buddy’s username on the list. Like this:
If you too found this nagging, and you use Linux, I have the solution you have been looking for. Just open a terminal and type in the following:
echo "gtk-enable-tooltips = 0" >> ~/.purple/gtkrc-2.0Now restart pidgin and the tooltip will no longer pop up. Hope this helps !!

thanks for sharing, it’s very simply
Nice post These tips all make sense, but it’s so easy to forget some of these points when you start writing a guest blog post… the last thing you want is to embarrass yourself on someone else’s blog!
Great post. I’ve already shared your tips with a couple newbie bloggers. Thanks!
They really should have an option to disable that rather than us needing to hack it via source code
Alternatively, I’d like to display a text tooltip, styled on a black background with different colors and sizes of text. I can just create the tooltip with mspaint and save it as an image, but don’t know which way of displaying it would be easier to code.
Awesome share man you have written it very well.
This tool is completely new for me. But it really seems to be very useful and convenient! Thanks a lot for sharing this post, now I have strong desire to find out more about this tool

After some digging around on the web, I found out how to disable pidgins tooltip on windows 7.
Start notpad as administrator and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Pidgin\Gtk\etc\gtk-2.0 (thats where i have Pidgin installed).
Open the file gtkrc (You might need to set “View all files” first) and add the line:
gtk-enable-tooltips = 0
Save and quit notepad.
Restart Pidgin!
