What is OLED?

OLED stands for “Organic Light-Emitting Diode”. It uses organic materials for the emission of light by the use of electric current.

How does it work?

A layer of organic material (generally a semiconductor) is situated between two electrodes (a cathode and an anode) followed by two glass plates, one on each side. Generally, at least one of these electrodes is transparent. When an electric current is applied between these two electrodes, there is generation of light due to emission of electrons.

What is so special about this?

• OLED Display works without backlight for generation of colors making it thinner and more compact than normal LCD Displays.
• OLEDs, since consisting of organic layer can be fabricated on plastic sheets (as compared to glass required for LCDs or LEDs displays) leading to possibility of roll-up displays in the next few years. (Quite amazing!!!)
  
• Also it can be reproduced in bigger screens more easily as compared to normal LCDs, LEDs.
• It can achieve deep black levels as compared to normal displays.
• It has faster response time as compared to recent existing technologies.
• It causes less strain on our eyes.
• Viewing Angle can be wide as 170 degrees because they produce their own light.

Cons associated with it?

• Water around OLEDs Displays can be very costly as these displays are very prone to water. It can’t withstand even a small water drop on the display.
• Also one of the major problems is its short life-time. Presently, it is around 14000 hours i.e. five years at 8 hours a day) when used for flat-panel displays as compared to 25000-40000 for LCDs or LEDs.
• Also the process of its manufacturing is quite-expensive.
• They can also be damaged by prolonged exposure to UV rays.

What is Ubuntu TV ??!!

It is a smart TV platform, kind of like Google TV, which can handle cable or satellite service, online video streaming and more. Mozilla celebrated the 7th birthday of Firefox with release of new Firefox 8 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android yesterday [Nov 9th]. Earlier this year , after the launch of Firefox 4 in March, Mozilla adopted a policy very similar to that of Chrome of regular updates coming every six weeks. Since then the numbers have lost their significance and Firefox 8 is no exception as it is very similar to its predecessor Firefox 7, visually speaking. Opera and Safari , however do not go for such frequent updates and a new version is released concurrent with a major update.

The only significant visual change is the addition of twitter to the search bar for select locales. Mozilla users can now search Twitter from Firefox search bar in the same way as they can search in Google, Bing, Amazon, Wikipedia or eBay. Mozilla had partnered with Twitter earlier this year to release a special build of Firefox that ties into the social network.

Other improved features include -Add-ons which were installed by third party programs are now disabled by default giving the user greater control, and support for a WebGL security feature: cross-origin resource sharing (CORS), which provides a secure method for loading textures from other domains. Also, the update of firefox for android now comes with Firefox Master Password.  This feature allows users to encrypt and save their usernames and passwords for other mobile Web applications in Firefox and to depend on the single master password. Mozilla also claims of faster browsing now, as Firefox 8.0 is said to be 32 times faster than Firefox 1.0.

Firefox has 450 million users globally, and is currently the No. 2  Web browser with roughly 25 percent market share, although Chrome is steadily catching up. Yet Firefox remains a significant and important part of the browsing landscape and Firefox 8 is expected to at least maintain its runner-up’s status, if not much improve it (No.1: Internet Explorer ; No.3: Google Chrome). How does it work?

Gnome Pie is triggered by keyboard shortcuts. Then a “pie” appears on the screen. By default there are five kinds of pies. One is a main menu pie which ports your main menu entries to a pie. The others are a media playback pie, a bookmarks pie, a window controller pie, applications pie and a session pie. There is an option to add custom options as well.

How can I try it !!

You can install gnome pie on Ubuntu by adding a PPA. Run the following to do so:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simonschneegans/testing
sudo apt-get update sudo
apt-get install gnome-pie

Arch Linux users can install gnome-pie from this AUR package. Others can find the code hosted at Github.

A little background

It is often experienced that after performing quite a “humongous” task your computer might seem sluggish. For example, extracting a huge file. During and for some time after extracting files, your system is quite irresponsive. Why is this ?

Linux has a tendency to “swap off” stuff from RAM to the hard disk when it runs short of memory. This causes the sluggishness as read/write to the hard disk is way slower than that to RAM. This tendancy can be customized in our favour i.e decrease the tendancy in this case, because we need as much possible process memory on our RAM than on the hard disk.

It is also often seen that after/during performing a memory consuming task, file browsing goes slow. This is because pagecache and swapcache are retained at the expense of  dentries and inodes (which kindof keeps track of the filesystem). This too can be controlled manually in Linux.

So how to do it?

The balance between “Swapping off to hard disk” and “Retaining in RAM” is maintained by an integer stored in the file /proc/sys/vm/swappiness. A value of 100 means that kernel will aggressively swap off application memory to hard disk. A value closer to 0 will rather retain application memory in RAM and hence system becomes more responsive. But remember that pursuing this might cause your system to run out of RAM. Hence default value is set as 60 in most distributions. You can check the  current value using :

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

You can temporarily set a value (10 in the example) by running the following as root :

echo 10>/proc/sys/vm/swappiness

The change can be made permanent by adding vm.swappiness=10 on your /etc/sysctl.conf file.

Similarly the coice between retaining swapcache and dentries and inodes is monitored by an integer in /proc/sys/vm/vfs_cache_pressure. The default value is 100. Any value less than 100 will tend to make file browsing faster as dentries and inodes are retained in cache actively. You can temporarily change the value using

echo 50>/proc/sys/vm/vfs_cache_pressure

Again the change can be made permenant by adding the line vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50 to your /etc/sysctl.conf file.

You can experiment with different values and choose a value which seems to suite you. Hope this helps !!

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.”

 

The iPhone 4S is now available in  US, Australia,France,Canada, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday and it will be available in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland on October 28th. Apple expects the iPhone 4S to be available in over 70 countries by the end of the year.

Students Version

The tablet has Android 2.2 Froyo operating system with a 7-inch resistive display screen. It has 256MB RAM with an internal storage capacity of 2GB expandable up to 32GB and also has a 2GB Flash Card. However the battery life is small lasting a maximum of 3hrs only. One of the special features of the tablet is the availability of USB ports within the tablet. The device has 2 USB ports. For connectivity, the device has Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g.

The processor however is very slow at 366MHz. However in order to increase its performance, it is equipped with a Graphics accelerator but watching HD Videos may still pose a problem. The browser used in the tablet is UBI Surfer which is supposedly 10 times faster than a normal mobile browser as reported by DataWind. We seriously doubt this claim. The tablet has two buttons one at the side panel which is a power on button and the other on the front panel which is the home button. While there is no inbuilt camera in the tablet, you can connect an external camera by USB.

Though it has an Android Operating System, the tablet doesn’t come with Android Marketplace support. Getjar is installed as a substitute. So a lot of cool Android apps will be out of reach of students.

The government intends to deliver 10 million tablets to post-secondary students across India @ Rs 1,750 per unit.

Overall considering the price of the tablet and its specifications, the tablet is quite attractive. The small size and light weight of just 350gm make it convenient to carry the device thus adding to its portability and compactness.
