The Gadget Show recently showed off its FPS Simulator, and everything about it is crazy. Using £500,000 and a copy of Battlefield 3, they will give you a BattleField Experience. You stand in a 4 by 9 dome, on an omni-directional treadmill. You walk, the character walks. The video dome surrounds you giving you a 180 degree field of view [maximum supported by the game], which rotates along with your gun. The gun itself is tracked by 10 infrared cameras, giving you a very precise aim. If there is an Achilles Heel in the game, its the gun which is more of a toy, with just an iPhone, and an accessory. We feel a customized gun would have really done the simulator justice, preferably something like the iPhone showing a an iron sight to get those medium-long range shots just right, with extra buttons/ triggers on the gun or body to switch weapons, and so on. A Hacked Kinect recognizes your jumps and crouches and translates them into commands for the game. But all this is not enough to inspire fear in the user. This is where the twelve Paintball Guns coming in, firing each time you are shot at. Finishing the experience is a full Surround Sound set-up along with LED Lighting. Go on, see it. And then wish for the Rs. 4,00,00,000 it will cost you to build one of these!
